When you thought your Monday couldn't get any worse, you could always blow out a tire or two or three or all four while driving on I-294 in Illinois.

Massive Pothole on Tri-State Tollway Damages Over 30 Cars

Illinois State Police said a massive, giant pothole, about 8 feet long and 3 feet wide, opened up in the northbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway near mile marker 19.75, close to Justice and Hickory Hills. By late morning, more than 30 vehicles had pulled over with flat tires, and some required towing due to the damage.

Traffic Snarled as Crews Scramble to Fix Tollway Damage

It all started just before 9 a.m. and disrupted traffic flow for the rest of the morning. Crews were seen scrambling to repair the damaged section of the road, with multiple lanes closed and drivers lined up, much like they would at an old-school toll booth.

Frustration Mounts: Drivers Question Toll Road Maintenance

Of course, there's no word on what caused the pothole to open up, but it's amusing considering it's a tollway. As in, we pay tolls for the road, and the road breaks up just like that? Just another day in Illinois, where roads are paid for but not maintained. If only we were certain those drivers would be reimbursed for their losses.

It's a good reminder, though, if you're using the toll roads in Illinois this summer, bring your patience, and who knows, maybe pack a spare tire. You never know when you'll need it.
