Seniors in Illinois are being urged to review their Medicare coverage as plan options and premiums change for 2026.

Medicare Open Enrollment Underway in Illinois

The Illinois Department of Aging (IDoA) is urging Medicare beneficiaries to review their health and prescription drug plans during the 2025 Open Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7.

According to the press release, this annual period allows individuals to compare plans, switch coverage, or make changes to ensure their plan continues to meet their medical and financial needs for the coming year.

Fewer Drug Plans and Rising Premiums for 2026

According to the state's Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP), the 2026 Medicare plans will have notable changes.

SHIP Director Sandy Leith said beneficiaries should be vigilant when reviewing their drug coverage, as there are fewer plans to choose from and some premiums have doubled in cost.

However, there are also four drug plans offering $0 premiums, which may benefit those trying to cut costs.

Leith emphasized that everyone on Medicare Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan should have received a notice detailing upcoming changes.

Your health needs can change from year to year, and so do Medicare plan costs and coverage. Please read your letters carefully to make sure your plan will still be available for 2026. -SHIP Director Sandy Leith
