These Illinois, Wisconsin Breweries Were Ranked Best in the U.S.

If you're into beer, you likely frequent a nearby microbrew in the Stateline. But if you want to get out and explore some of the best breweries in our region, this list is a great place to start.

How Did They Rate Breweries in America?

According to an app called Untappd that's frequently used by thousands of beer enthusiasts, rankings are made using the average rating of each local brewery and have a formula that "effectively rates all breweries against each other and gives weight to their beers with higher rating count."

Where are America's Top 10 Ranked Breweries?

Only one Midwestern brewery had a top 10 ranking on Untappd's list of America's Best Breweries with most of the top 5 being on the East Coast.

The top-rated brewery in the United States is Tree House Brewing Company in Charlton, Massachusetts. Vermont's The Alchemist and Trillium Brewing in Canton, Massachusetts round out the Top 3.

Decorah, Iowa's Toppling Goliath Brewing Company was the 8th highest-rated in the U.S. and was also named the US Beer Open Grand National Champions back in 2021.

Where are Wisconsin and Illinois' Top-Rated Breweries?

The 22nd highest-rated brewery in America is located just north of Madison. Untitled Art in Waunakee, Wisconsin has nearly 1 million ratings, and over 340 beers have been ranked by Untappd.

The 37th highest-rated brewery in the U.S. is located in Chicago, Illinois. Maplewood Brewery and Distillery is "proudly brewed in Logan Square" on the city's northside, according to Untappd.

Another Wisconsin brewery snuck into Untappd's list of Top 40 highest-rated in America at #39. Twelve5 Brewing Company in Neenah, Wisconsin is the "home to Twelve5's Rebel Hard Coffee & now Twelve5's Rebel Hard Tea!"

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery.
