The federal government’s Real ID requirement is about to go into full effect, and Illinois residents still have time to prepare—but we don't have much.

What is a Real ID and Why Do You Need One?

A Real ID is a state-issued identification card or driver’s license that meets stricter security standards set by the federal government. Beginning May 7, 2025, you’ll need either a Real ID or a valid passport to board domestic flights. Regular Illinois driver’s licenses will no longer be sufficient for air travel.

How to Get a Real ID in Illinois

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office has been working to get residents ready for the switch, but appointments to obtain a Real ID are filling up fast. Here’s what you need to do:

• Make an appointment ASAP: Visit the Illinois Secretary of State’s website to schedule your visit. Walk-ins may not be accommodated due to high demand.
• Bring the required documents: You’ll need proof of identity (e.g., birth certificate or passport), proof of Social Security number, two proofs of residency (e.g., utility bill, bank statement), and a written signature verification (e.g., current driver’s license).
• Pay the fee: A Real ID costs $30, the same as a standard driver’s license.

What Happens If You Don’t Have a Real ID at the Airport?

If you show up at the airport without a Real ID or an alternative federally accepted form of identification, like a passport, you will not be allowed to board your flight. TSA will turn you away, and your travel plans will come to an abrupt end.
