What Makes Riding in a Truck Bed Dangerous?

Cargo areas of pickup trucks are not designed to carry passengers. There are no seats and no seatbelts. NHTSA says that those who ride in the bed of pickup trucks are "taking a substantial risk." Ejection from the vehicle during a crash is the biggest risk of riding in the bed of a truck. <p>Most deaths and injuries attributed to pickup truck crashes are a result of passengers being thrown out of the cargo area during a rollover. A person riding in the cargo area of a truck is 26 times more likely to be ejected than a person riding in the cab.
