Costco and Trader Joe's stores in Minnesota and nationwide are removing various products from their shelves following a CDC warning about listeria contamination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 26 cases, with 23 hospitalizations and 2 fatalities. Learn more about the recalled items and find out what to do if you've purchased the items below.

Minnesota Costco and Trader Joe's Remove Products After 2 Deaths

The FDA notes that the outbreak, spanning back to 2014, is still ongoing. Customers are urged to check product labels and throw out the recalled food items.

The CDC is alerting people about specific cheeses, yogurts, and sour creams possibly connected to a listeria outbreak that has affected 26 individuals, causing 23 hospitalizations and two deaths.

On Wednesday, Trader Joe's initiated a recall of three products—Chicken Enchiladas Verde (sku 58292), Cilantro Salad Dressing (sku 36420), and Elote Chopped Salad Kit (sku 74768). The recall was prompted by the identification of cotija cheese from Rizo-López Foods in these items.

Rizo-López Foods chose to recall all items from its Modesto facility due to concerns about Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This recall, backed by the FDA, is happening during a widespread outbreak across the country.

The recalled products, sold under various brands, carry sell-by dates between March 23 and July 31, 2024. Rizo-López Foods urges consumers to check and discard affected items, providing a hotline (1-833-296-2233) for inquiries.

Costco Urges Customers To Return Products

Costco has issued a recall, urging customers to return two products with Rizo-López Food ingredients sold at its stores. These products are the Southwest Chicken Wrap with Sauce from its Service Deli, available between Oct. 27, 2023, and Feb. 6, 2024, and the Chicken Street Taco Kit from its Service Deli, sold between Jan. 25 and Feb. 6.

According to ABC News, "The recalled products were sold nationwide under the following brands and at deli counters: Campesino, Casa Cardenas, Don Francisco, Dos Ranchitos, El Huache, Food City, La Ordena, Rio Grande, Rizo Bros, San Carlos, Santa Maria, Tio Francisco and 365 Whole Foods Market. The products are marked with a wide range of sell-by dates between March 23 and July 31, 2024."

In a statement, Edwin Rizo, CEO of Rizo-López Foods, emphasized that this is the first time their products are linked to a foodborne illness. They've halted production, initiated a voluntary recall, and are diligently investigating to prevent future incidents, prioritizing customer health and safety.
