I have yet to go into an Illinois post office where the window clerk wasn't glad to answer any questions I had. That's my recommendation if you have any serious questions about whether or not something is OK to mail.
There are some relatively new technologies that you should be aware of that also have some mail restrictions. For example, anything with a lithium-ion battery must have a label on the outside visible to the carriers showing whatever you're mailing has one included.
