Emergency Bulletin About Highly-Infectious Outbreak in Missouri
There's an emergency bulletin from the Centers for Disease Control about a highly-infectious outbreak that is happening in 7 states including Missouri.
The CDC has issued this emergency bulletin after they learned that over the past 30 days, there has been an explosion of cases that includes Missouri. They shared this terse warning about what they're watching:
a total of 9 measles cases were reported by 4 jurisdictions: Georgia, Missouri, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania
Dating back to December of last year, there are now 23 cases of measles reported including those affected in Missouri. They classified this outbreak as "a global threat".
Why are these measles cases in Missouri an emergency concern?
The complications from the measles can be severe in some individuals. The CDC says "Children younger than 5 years of age and adults older than 20 years of age are more likely to suffer from complications. Common complications are ear infections and diarrhea. Serious complications include pneumonia and encephalitis."
What do you do if you believe you have the measles?
After confirming with a doctor, you are advised to "isolate, notify, test, manage and vaccinate".
It's worth noting that Missouri is of special concern among the states affected since the cases back in late 2023 seemed to originate from here according to the CDC bulletin.
