Do you think winter is officially over in the Northland? Think again, at least if you believe in the Old Farmer's Almanac. I made the mistake of looking at their forecast for the next few months and they say snow in the forecast.

Minnesota as a whole has seen a very mild winter! Duluth has barely seen winter at all, aside from a few brief cold snaps and a few light snow showers. In fact, it's been so mild that last month was the least snowy February on record.

What Is The Old Farmer's Almanac Predicting For Duluth?

It looks like that might be changing soon. The Old Farmer's Almanac is forecasting snow in March and in April, meaning if you believe in their methodology, winter isn't over at all. An early spring might also be out of the question.

How Much Snow Are They Predicting In March And When?

Take a deep breath and read on! The Old Farmer's Almanac is forecasting snow off and on throughout the entire month of March. They are predicting rain and snow showers at times, with flurries at other times.

According to their forecast, we won't really get a break from the rain and snowy conditions they are predicting for March in the Northland. However, we have been pretty mild and dry so far in March so maybe their forecast won't pan out.

What About April?

This is where things get hairy. Here's the April forecast for the Northland, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac:

  • The month will start out with snow showers and cold temperatures.
  • From the 4th through the 6th, we will see rain and snow mix with cold temperatures.
  • From the 7th through the 12th, prepare for sunshine and warmer temperatures. This might also be known as a 'fake spring' situation.
  • From the 13th to the 18th, we will see showers and storms, with rainy periods rounding out the month.

What Does This Mean For Spring In The Northland?

Basically, we might see some snow showers to start out April but then things will warm up and that snow will turn to rain. It doesn't look to be a super snowy month but considering we all thought winter was over, it's something to be aware of.

Again, you have to take the Old Farmer's Almanac with a grain of salt. They make longterm weather predictions by region. Some believe in their methods and others don't. Take this information as you will!

The 15 Least Snowy Winters On Record In Duluth History

Since the National Weather Service began keeping weather records in Duluth in the late 1800s, here are the 15 winters with the lowest snowfall totals on historical record.

It is worth noting that the official records from 1941-today have been recorded at the area now known as the Duluth International Airport (away from the lake, on top of the hill). Before then, various locations closer to Lake Superior had been used for official weather recording data. For anyone that knows anything about how Lake Superior and the hill play a role in temperature and snow, you can see how this makes older records inherently different.

While these records note the "least snowy winters", they actually include all seasonal snowfall from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.
