Illinois Digital IDs: Here’s What You Need To Know About Them
It looks like we're almost where we were told things would be nearly a year ago.
The law that enables digital driver’s licenses and state IDs in Illinois, House Bill 4592, took effect January 1, 2025, but it wasn't until yesterday that the announcement was made that we're actually doing it.
Illinois is entering a new era of convenience and modern identity verification. As of today, November 19, 2025, Illinois residents can add our driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallets on our iPhones or Apple Watches, following a long‑anticipated rollout by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.
We now join Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Iowa, New Mexico, Ohio, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, while other states are in various stages of rollout, reflecting a national push toward mobile IDs.
So, what does this mean for you? And, what about Android phone users?
The Illinois Secretary Of State's Office Is Big On The Idea Of Digital IDs and Driver's Licenses
"This is a game changer for Illinois residents," Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said Tuesday during an announcement press conference. "Your ID can live right on your iPhone — ready to use at airports, restaurants, and bars across the state. This launch brings together security, privacy, and convenience in a way that will make life easier for millions of people. We promised innovative solutions, and today, we're delivering."
It's all about privacy, convenience, and speed when it comes to digital IDs and licenses here in Illinois. Maybe you're flying out of one of Illinois' airports, grabbing a drink, or stopping by the store for some adult beverages. You won't be fumbling around in your wallet for the ID you need, because it'll be right there on your phone.
Adding Your Illinois Digital ID Or Illinois Driver's License To Your Apple Wallet Is Pretty Straightforward
According to a release by the Illinois Secretary of State's Office, here's what you do:
Tap the “+” in Apple Wallet.
Select “Driver’s License or State ID.”
Scan your physical card, take a selfie, and complete a few head movement checks for verification.
Once verified, your digital license is securely encrypted on your device.
When presenting your ID in person, simply hold your phone or watch near a compatible reader, select what information to share (like just confirming you’re over 21), and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID. Online or in-app verification also works with a “Verify with Apple Wallet” option.
Android users are going to have to wait a little longer. The Secretary of State says that the Android version will be available sometime after the first of the year in 2026.
If You're Undecided About Getting A Digital ID Or Driver's License, That's Perfectly Okay
From reading a bunch of comments sections about this topic, here's what I see being discussed most when it comes to pros and cons of digital IDs:
Pros:
Convenience: No more digging through a wallet.
Privacy: Share only the information necessary for the situation.
Security: Encrypted storage with biometric verification.
Modernization: Brings DMV services into the digital era.
Cons:
Physical ID still required: Keep your old card handy for now.
Limited acceptance: Not every business or law enforcement agency is required to accept it yet.
Device dependency: Battery issues or loss could leave you temporarily without your ID.
Privacy concerns: Some may feel uneasy with biometric scans or digital storage.
