Every Christmas season, I find myself doing the same thing a lot of you probably do. I flip channels looking for something fun, I land on Home Alone, and I let it play for the umpteenth time. I know every line. I know every trap. And like so many Illinoisans, I still get a little kick out of knowing that Kevin McCallister’s house is a real place in Winnetka.

But this year, there’s a detail about that house that’s a lot less heartwarming, and that says a lot about Illinois and our taxes.

According to IllinoisPolicy.org, the iconic Home Alone house, located at 671 Lincoln Avenue is facing a property tax bill of nearly $52,000 this year. Let that sink in for a second. That’s not a mortgage payment. That’s not upkeep or repairs. That’s just the price of owning the house, after you've already paid for the house.

The Home Alone House's Tax Bill Hasn't Always Been This High

What really stopped me in my tracks is how fast that number has grown. Just a few years ago, the tax bill was roughly $20,000 less. And since the movie debuted back in 1990, the total amount paid in property taxes on that single home has now climbed past $1.1 million. One house. One million dollars. In taxes.

Yes, this is a big, beautiful, famous home in a wealthy suburb. But that’s kind of the point. This isn’t really a story about a movie house. It’s a snapshot of what living in Illinois feels like for a lot of homeowners right now.

Illinois consistently ranks near the top nationally for property taxes, and it’s not because our homes are magically more valuable than everyone else’s. It’s because of how our system works. We have nearly 7,000 separate taxing bodies across the state. School districts, municipalities, townships, special districts all dipping into the same homeowner pocket.

Taxes On A Famous Movie House In A Well-Heeled Area Are One Thing, Taxes On Your More Modest Home Are Something Else

That’s the part that doesn’t get talked about enough. Rising property taxes hit hardest if you don’t live in a famous movie house. If you’re a retiree on a fixed income. A young family stretching to buy their first home. Someone who can’t afford lawyers or tax appeals every year just to keep their bill from jumping again.

The Home Alone house makes for a catchy headline, especially around the holidays. But it also raises a bigger question, one that Illinois homeowners ask every year when the bill shows up in the mailbox: how long can this keep going?
