SYCAMORE, Ill. (AP) — A group whose ancestors fought in the Civil War is raising money to restore a vandalized monument in northern Illinois.

The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reports the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War hopes to raise $10,000 for repairs.

The century-old memorial in front of the DeKalb County Courthouse in Sycamore depicts three soldiers. A sword and a musket are missing, although the musket's been replaced with a wooden replica.

James Locke Lyon is commander of Illinois' Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He says more than 2,200 DeKalb County men fought in the war. The group intends to use any money left following the repairs for restoring Civil War veteran grave markers in DeKalb County.

Artist Michael Kraus has been selected for the work.
