Local business owners have announced a new effort to give Freeport residents a fireworks show after all.

As was reported earlier in the week, the City of Freeport had cancelled the Independence Day fireworks show due to budgetary constraints, the close timing of the Stephenson County Fair and the inability to form a new group to coordinate the event.

Now, it seems that things have taken a turn for the better. Not only will there be a show, they're making plans for the future, too.

The event will be named Light the Night Freedom Fest.

This year’s event will only showcase fireworks, but the event is expected to expand as early as next year. The expanded event would include a parade, a community festival with music, food, family friendly events and conclude with the fireworks show.

The annual event is completely funded by community donations and next year’s planning will start in August of 2018. This year’s event will take place on July 7 at the Stephenson County Fairgrounds.

So, Freeport residents, come on over to Rockford on the 4th, and we'll come and hang out with you on the 7th!
