Summer is (un)officially here. As the weather begins to warm and so does the water, it's time to jump in and get wet. Over the next several days scroll through your friends' accounts on Facebook or Instagram or check their stories on Snapchat and you will probably see someone on or in the water. It is that season now.

More and more, people are hitting the rivers and lakes with the same mission, enjoy the weather, water, and a cold drink. It is as if, as divided as our country may look in the news when we're in the water we're all the same. It truly reminds you of how similar we all are. If you disagree you are doing it wrong.

As a "river rat", I'm always looking for a good place to float where it is on a tube or on my kayak. Either option is one of the few moments where my brain slows down. Being on the water is my therapy. But where is a good place to float?

Where is a good place to float in Northern Illinois?

There are two locations near the Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin area that do the work for you; provide a tube and a shuttle.

The first is my personal favorite, it's S&B Tubing in Albany, Wisconsin.  Another great option south of the IL/WI border is White Pelican in Oregon, Illinois.

But, if you're looking you're a movie lover looking for a truly unique floating experience you will love this.

Grab your tube, kayak, or canoe and make plans to visit Heritage Harbor in Ottawa, Illinois in late July for their FREE "Float-In" movie night. There are a few things you need to know though.

  • Anyone floating in the harbor must bring their own life jacket if they are 18 or younger.
  • Anyone under 12 must be accompanied by an adult
  • Your float can't block others from seeing the movie
  • There are places to sit on the shore if you don't want to float.

The movie, by the way, is very fitting. It's JAWS!

This free event is Friday, July 29 at 8:45 PM, you can find more information here.
