Ex-Radical Group Member Might Get U of I Job Back

CHICAGO (AP) — University of Illinois officials say 1970s-era radical James Kilgore can again be hired to teach at the school.

Kilgore was told earlier this year he would no longer be employed as an instructor. Trustees Chairman Christopher Kennedy said then he didn't believe Kilgore should work at the school.

But the university's board of trustees said Thursday it debated Kilgore's case. They took no action because trustees aren't usually involved in hiring part-time employees.

According to The (Champaign) News-Gazette, Urbana-Champaign campus Chancellor Phyllis Wise said that means departments would be able to hire Kilgore.

Kilgore served time in prison for his role in a 1975 bank robbery in California during which a housewife died.

He worked as a part-time instructor at the university after his 2009 prison release.
