Discount Retailer With 700 Illinois Stores To Close 100 Locations
We're a little over 3 and a half months into 2025, and it's already been a tough year for retailers who are trying to keep their doors open here in Illinois and across the entire country.
Just look back at the retailers that have been making less-than-good news since the start of the year. Big Lots, Joann Fabrics, and Walgreens have all announced and begun closure of multiple locations in every state, and one of those three has gone so far as to reject gift cards that have already been paid for--which is really annoying for customers.
Now, another major discount retailer with almost 700 Illinois locations has had to face some tough truths, and they're about to shutter nearly 100 stores across the US.
Dollar General Recently Released Their Fourth Quarter And Fiscal 2024 Report, And They're About To Make Some Changes
In addition to the nearly 100 Dollar General stores that the company is planning on closing, they'll also be closing the doors on almost 50 of their home-decor stores, called "pOpshelf." As part of their 4th Quarter report, the company said that it has chosen to close a number of locations after evaluating the individual stores’ performances, operating conditions, and expected future performance.
Currently, Popshelf’s store locator shows the company has more than 220 stores spread across 20 states. A closure of 45 of those stores means Popshelf’s store count is being reduced by roughly 20%.
As for the 96 Dollar General store closures, Dollar General Corporation says it currently has more than 20,000 Dollar General stores across 48 states. “While the number of closings represents less than one percent of our overall store base, we believe this decision better positions us to serve our customers and communities,” Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO, said.
So, What's The Plan For The Nearly 700 Illinois Locations Of Dollar General?
Since the announcement last week, Dollar General has not released any lists about which locations are facing the axe over the next few months, but that information will probably be coming out fairly soon.
Here's how many Dollar General Stores are currently in Illinois and our surrounding neighbor states, according to Statista.com:
- Illinois: 698
- Wisconsin: 283
- Iowa: 328
- Missouri: 670
- Indiana: 695
- Kentucky: 751
Texas leads the nation in Dollar General locations with 1,889. Next comes Georgia (1,098), North Carolina (1,076), Florida (1,061), and Ohio (1,007).
