I've done the research.

If you want to debate this we can, but you'd be wrong.

I've eaten A LOT of tacos. Mexican is easily my favorite cuisine and tacos are my favorite subset of the Mexican genre.

Now to be clear, when I say tacos, I'm referring to the type of tacos pictured above. Corn (preferably doubled) tortillas, a protein (pictured above left to right is: steak, carnitas, and chorizo), onion, cilantro, and lime for garnish.

I still remember the first time I had a taco like this. The year was 1998. I was working at Interstate Pollution Control (now closed) out by the airport. My friend's dad owned it and I was working there over the summer. One of the guys there, Estaban, sent me out to El Reboso's (now also closed, unfortunately) on 11th street to get some lunch. He threw in some extra steak tacos for me as payment for the errand. I fell in love with those tacos while eating them over an oil-stained Formica workroom table. I was hooked and have been searching for great tacos ever since. Which eventually lead me to this place:

The Guanajuato grocery store on Marchesano Drive, across the river from Marinelli Field.

This unassuming Mexican grocer has a taqueria in the back that is slinging the best tacos in Rockford. The tortillas are soft and supple. The fillings are delicious and plentiful. They have a self serve chips and salsa station. You can get three huge tacos, unlimited chips and salsa, and a Jarritos (I prefer lime) for under 10 bucks. You literally can't beat it.

There are plenty of other great options in Rockford (I'll get to those in a later blog) but these are the best.

P.S. Guanajuato also has some of the best produce in the city and a butcher counter that rivals some of the best, and priciest, meat purveyors in town. A true gem in Rockford.
