DIXON, Ill. (AP) — A Lee County Court judge has sentenced a convicted murderer to 90 years in prison for beating and slashing a 79-year-old fellow Amboy man nearly two years ago.

Matthew Welling was convicted in May of five counts of first degree murder and home invasion. The Telegraph in Dixon reports the 34-year-old was handed a 60-year sentence Wednesday for fatally beating and slashing Leroy Daniels in July 2012. Welling was given another 30 years for the home invasion that preceded the attack.

An autopsy found Daniels had a broken jaw, ribs and nose, along with more than 30 cuts and stabs to his head. He bled to death from a deep neck cut.

Judge Ron Jacobson told Welling that he scared "the bejeebies" out of him in explaining the sentence.
