• A local charity has received assistance in the fight to curb hunger. The Northern Illinois Food Bank is one of 50 organizations across the country to receive $60,000 from Walmart. The Northern Illinois Food Bank is located in Geneva and serves 13 counties including the Stateline.
  • Police continue to investigate skeletal remains found near the Rock River yesterday. Police say it is unclear how long the remains were there or how they ended up there. It is not being called a murder investigation at this time.
  • Illinois public health officials discussed  the state's preparedness for the Ebola virus at a media briefing. The director of the Illinois Department of Public Health says there are no confirmed or suspected cases in the state. If a case of Ebola arises in the future, officials immediately will inform the public and provide as much information as possible.
  • Illinois lawmakers are quizzing former state officials at a Chicago hearing on Governor Pat Quinn's troubled anti-violence program. The panel is reviewing a report that revealed management and spending problems in the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative and has subpoenaed seven former Quinn administration officials. Federal authorities also are investigating the program.
  • The federal government plans implement heightened health screenings for travelers arriving from West Africa and several airports nationwide including in Chicago’s O’Hare. Two Chicago aldermen proposed today that the city set up its own screening facilities at O'Hare and Midway. Airlines would pay for the facilities under their proposal.
  • Some Rockford residents are describing bicycle friendly stripes in the middle of roadways as being confusing for drivers. They say that they are marked in a way that indicates riders can bike down the middle of the street. Marked bike routes are aimed to let Rockford drivers know that they’re sharing the road with bicycles.  Officials say these designated routes are trying to promote bicycle ridership in the city.
