I have one hell of a sweet tooth...so when I'm being good and avoiding sweets, I find myself thinking about and looking up recipes and info about sweets. In a weird way, it pretty much does the trick for me. I read it, I see it, I no longer want it.

While doing some "sweets" research...I guess...I spiraled out of control reading about brownies. Yummy. I found this story about the first ever chocolate brownie ever created, and it was done at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. ATLAS

Back in 1893 in the Palmer House Pastry Kitchen the first ever known "chocolate brownie" was unveiled. It was shared at the 1893 Columbian World’s Fair. The exact recipe and brownie for “Bertha’s Famous Brownie" which was named after Potter Palmer's wife, is still being served today in Chicago.

This historic hotel served as sleeping quarters for, Presidents James Garfield, Grover Cleveland, Ulysses S. Grant, and William McKinley. Countless celebrity and high profile, "the elite" always stayed at this legendary hotel.

That's cool and all, but let's talk the chocolate brownie again...I found the recipe for the official "Bertha’s Famous Brownie," it goes like this: PALMER

  • 14oz. Semi Sweet Chocolate
  • 1lb Butter
  • 12oz. Granulated Sugar
  • 4oz. Flour
  • 8 Eggs
  • 12oz. Crushed Walnuts
  • Vanilla Extract

Seems pretty simple...I can go without the walnuts, but it is the first ever chocolate brownie for I can deal with it.

After these guys cool slighty, there's a unique topping that is added:

  • Glaze:
  • Mix together 1 c. water
  • 1 c. apricot preserves
  • 1 tsp. unflavored gelatin in sauce pan
  • Mix thoroughly and bring to a boil for two minutes.
  • Brush hot glaze on brownies while still warm.

I'm sold. Delish.
