Whenever you hear someone say that they'd much rather live in a small town than in a big city, keep in mind that they would probably much prefer life in a rich small town than a small town that could be described as being "dirt poor."

There's nothing wrong with that, but it's a whole lot easier to find an affordable home and neighborhood in the latter category than in the former here in Illinois, as you probably know.

The competition for Illinois' poorest small town is undoubtedly much stiffer than the one for the richest small town and would take much longer to write about, so let's instead go where the money is.

Let's Take A Look At The Richest Small Towns In Two States, Illinois And Wisconsin

When it comes to small-town living in Illinois and Wisconsin, “quiet” doesn’t always mean cheap. A recent survey by GOBankingRates, spotlighted by media outlets nationwide, identified the wealthiest small towns, those with 500 to 15,000 households, in every US state.

In Illinois, the top spot went to Riverwoods, a leafy, low-density community about 30 miles northwest of Chicago. According to the survey, Riverwoods boasts a median household income of $243,036, far above the Illinois state median household income of $83,200:

Crossing The Border (or, Cheddar Curtain) Into Wisconsin, The Richest Small Town Also Includes The Word "River" In Its Name

In Wisconsin, the wealthiest small town is River Hills, a suburban village just outside Milwaukee, with a median household income of about $198,750 per year, compared to the median Wisconsin state household income of $77,488:

  • Average home value: $910,937
  • Livability: 71

You’ll find River Hills roughly 10 miles north of downtown Milwaukee. With less than 1,700 residents, it's one of the least-populated places on the list.
