Before we even get to the most-monied zip codes in Illinois, one quick question:

Do you know what "zip" in zip code stands for? It stands for "Zone Improvement Plan."

The term was introduced by the US Postal Service in 1963 when they created the ZIP Code system to make mail delivery faster and more efficient. The idea was that by adding a set of standardized numbers to addresses, mail could “zip” through the system with improved sorting and routing.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how ZIP Codes work:

  • The first digit represents a general region of the US (for example, 6 covers much of the Midwest, including Illinois).

  • The next two digits narrow it down to a specific sectional center or large city.

  • The final two digits pinpoint a local post office or delivery area.

In 1983, the USPS expanded the system to include ZIP+4 Codes, which is the regular five digits plus a hyphen and four more numbers, which identify an even more specific location like a city block, apartment group, or business complex.
