Sure, you can head into Chicago to check out normal museums like the Field Museum or the Museum of Science and Industry.

What if you're looking for something a little left of center?

NO FLIGHTS NEEDED FOR THIS STRANGE TRIP

Lucky for you, because you won't have to go too far in order to get it.

Checking out Love Exploring's list of The Strangest Museums in the United States, I stumbled upon a few that aren't too far from Rockford.

INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF SURGERY?

The first one is in Chicago, and it's called the International Museum of Surgical Science, and it's exactly what it sounds like.

Loveexploring.com:

The International Museum of Surgical Science is dedicated to the history and science of surgery – so it’s safe to say it’s not for the faint-hearted.

The museum touts itself as "North America's only museum devoted to surgery." You don't say?

The International Museum of Surgical Science is located at 1524 North Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.

SURGERY NOT YOUR THING? HOW ABOUT A POPULAR CONDIMENT?

If a museum devoted to surgery is just too weird for you, maybe you're interested in all things mustard?

The National Mustard Museum is also one of the weirdest museums in America.

Loveexploring.com:

There are more than 6,000 mustards on display in this piquant museum, including examples from each of the 50 states and many others sourced (or sauced?) from around the globe.

If you're the kind of person that wants mustard on everything, you're coming to the right place.

Mustardmuseum.com says they "know mustard" and refers to themselves as "America's favorite condiment museum."

The National Mustard Museum is can be found at 7477 Hubbard Avenue in Middleton, Wisconsin.

Both of these places are pretty weird. If they had a ketchup museum close to Rockford, I'm pretty sure all my kids would love to go.

Actually, there is a ketchup exhibit at the Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh. I'd better not mention this place exists to my kids. I'd probably end up spending my summer there.
