Wisconsin Town Is Crawling With (Possibly Creepy) Wooden Trolls
Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin is a quiet, unassuming small Wisconsin town with some peculiar statues standing guard around as tourist attractions.
It all started in 1976 when the owners of a Scandinavian gift shop in town, Open House, imported a troll from Sweden and displayed it outside their store where it was visible from the highway.
It quickly became a point of interest to truckers and others that drove through the area. The city is directly west of Madison on Route 151 so traffic is high with people heading west from Milwaukee through the state.
The stretch of highway around Mt. Horeb was quickly renamed the "Trollway" and a theme was born.
Since then a local artist has carved over 15 unique and one-of-a-kind trolls that pop up all over the city.
Some trolls point out historic sites around the city.
While others just point out where to get some food.
The troll theme has take over the city and there's even a restaurant that celebrates the invasion called The Grumpy Troll. You'll have to stop in for a beer during your visit.
The city celebrates their trolls every year with a troll festival that includes a visit from the city's live troll, Jorgen, that is the celebrity guest at troll events around the city throughout the year.
Mt. Horeb is just a few miles north of the border and the perfect subject for a day trip to get out and see something just a little different.
