Another day, another settlement in a class-action lawsuit. Sound familiar?

Lawsuit settlement agreements have been in the news a lot lately, and if you’re a Trader Joe’s shopper, the latest one should definitely get your attention.

According to NBC Chicago, Trader Joe’s has agreed to a $7.4 million class-action settlement tied to claims that some of its stores violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) by printing receipts that exposed too much credit and debit card information.

Specifically, some receipts allegedly displayed the first six and last four digits of customers’ card numbers, which is far more than federal law allows, and enough to raise concerns about identity theft risk.

The Lawsuit Dates Back To Purchases Made In 2019

Specifically, purchases made between March 5th, 2019, and July 19th, 2019.

The argument was that this formatting error could have exposed sensitive financial data to store employees or anyone else who saw the receipt. While Trader Joe’s has denied any wrongdoing and says the issue only affected a small number of transactions, the company agreed to settle to avoid continued litigation.

Here’s the part that's catching Trader Joe's customers attention: Eligible customers could receive an estimated payout of about $102.45, depending on how many valid claims are submitted. Claims must be filed by June 9th, 2026, and a final approval hearing is scheduled for August 2026.

You May Not Have Realized How Big A Player Trader Joe's Is In The Grocery World

Trader Joe's, based in California, has more than 500 stores nationwide and has built a loyal following thanks to its private-label products, quirky branding, and cult-favorite items like Everything But the Bagel Seasoning and Mandarin Orange Chicken. It has also earned a reputation for offering a constantly rotating selection of unique, often seasonal products that keep customers coming back.

I have a friend who believes that angels sing when he walks through the door of Trader Joe's.

While $100 is probably not life-changing money, if you shopped at Trader Joe’s during the covered period, it may be worth checking whether you’re eligible. Even in a world full of settlement notices, this is one where a few minutes of attention could actually pay off.
