FREEPORT, Ill. (AP) — A Freeport man was arrested on a burglary charge after learning what every police officer knows: It's easier to track suspects who leave their tracks in the snow.

The (Freeport) Journal Standard reports that Jose L. Martinez was arrested last weekend by a police officer responding to an alarm at the Happy Wok restaurant in Freeport. The officer followed tracks from the back door to the spot where Martinez was standing at an intersection.

Police questioned the 19-year-old Martinez and found he was carrying $7.82 worth of coins stuffed inside a sock they suspect was taken from the restaurant cash drawer.

Martinez faces a felony charge because of a prior theft conviction. On Tuesday, he remained in Stephenson County Jail. It was not immediately known if he'd retained an attorney.
