The Fish We’re Supposed To ‘Kill Immediately’ Was Sighted In Illinois

When a fish is labeled as something that needs to be killed immediately, you know it's serious business.

Just yesterday, officials from the Georgia Department of Natural Resource said Northern Snakehead fish are "bad news"  and if seen people should "kill it immediately" because "they can survive on land."

A killer fish that can survive on land sounds like a bad time, but the Northern Snakehead is only in Georgia, right? Right?

Actually, according to nas.er.usgs.gov the Northern Snakehead was seen in Illinois too.

The only record of the fish sighting is from Burnham Harbor in Chicago, the little body of water sandwiched between Soldier Field and Northerly Island Park.

There are also some really strict rules regarding the Northern Snakehead in Illinois. Under "Injurious Species," conservation code prohibits selling or owning Snakehead Fish and is punishable with a fine up to $5,000.

While the sighting in Chicago might make you a bit concerned, there have been zero sightings of the Northern Snakehead fish in the Rock River.
