The idea is not just for a car to be self-driving. According to Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars,

“Anyone who focuses solely on the technology has not yet grasped how autonomous driving will change our society, the car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a mobile living space.”

I know that motivational speaker Matt Foley looked as his "van down by the river" as a mobile living space, but Dr. Zetsche has something a bit more palatable in mind for his cars.
