Maybe it's from spending half my life inside the Chicago city limits, or maybe it's something else, but I found this study completely surprising.

SmartAsset put used four different metrics to find the state with the worst drivers:

  • Percentage of drivers insured
  • Number of DUIs per 1,000 drivers
  • Number of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles driven
  • How often residents search for terms like "traffic ticket" or "speeding ticket" on the internet

Here are the 10 states with the worst drivers.

  1. Mississippi
  2. Nevada
  3. Tennessee
  4. Florida
  5. California
  6. Arizona
  7. South Carolina
  8. Texas
  9. New Mexico
  10. Alaska

Illinois ranked nowhere near the top 10 or even top 25 in this study.

Even crazier, Illinois tied for 13th best overall with neighboring Iowa and New Jersey.

DUI arrests per 1,000 drivers in Illinois sits at 0.32, the lowest in the US.

Do you think this study is spot on or are we not googling "speeding tickets" enough in Illinois? Tell us!
