Illinois State Representative Chuck Jefferson has submitted his resignation from his seat effectively immediately. Jefferson has served since 2001 representing the 67th District, which encompasses most of the west and southeast sides of Rockford.

No reason was given for the move. Our news partners at Eyewitness News have posted the official letter. State Senator Tim Bivins tells WROK the resignation took him by surprise and he had no warning that this news might be coming.

Eyewitnes News reports on what will happen next:

In the meantime, a committee will meet to submit the names of candidates to fill Jefferson's term.  Jefferson's Chief of Staff, Litesa Wallace, is considered a frontrunner for the position.

Current Winnebago County Board member John Guevara previously announced his intention to run for the seat. It appears he has been slated as the Republican candidate for November.
