Smartphones, Smart TVs, and Now–Smart Mattresses?
For those who just can't get enough technology in their lives, this new innovative new product, the Luna Smart Mattress, might seem like a godsend.
First off, it's not actually a mattress. It's a mattress cover. But, what a mattress cover!
From Engadget:
It's embedded with sensors to detect breathing and heart rate, accelerometers to track sleep patterns and microphones to hear your snoring. The cover then sends data to an Android or iOS app and adjusts temperatures accordingly, depending on your preference. Yep, it heats up or cools down to make you feel comfortable, and it can supposedly even maintain different temperatures on each side of the bed.
How much would you pay? But wait, there's more! (I've gotta stop watching late-night infomercials)
Even better, since it's open source, you can make it work with the rest of a connected home, assuming you've been replacing your fixtures and furniture with their internet-connected counterparts. Luna can integrate with Nest, and you can also program it so that your smart door lock activates when you get into bed, or so that the coffeemaker starts brewing as soon as you wake up. It's not exactly available just yet, but it's now open for preorder for $179 a piece.
Another note from Gizmag:
Other noteworthy features of Luna's connected mattress cover include the ability to use your smartphone as a remote to set your bed's temperature ahead of time, and a smart alarm designed to wake you up during a light phase of sleep. It is available for Queen, King and California King mattresses and is washing machine friendly.
Prices range from US$199 to $229 depending on sizing, but those looking to smarten up their sleeping will have to wait a little while yet. Luna is available for preorder through a campaign on Indiegogo, where the $100,000 funding goal was put to bed in just six hours. If the remainder of the project runs as planned, the company will begin shipping out its mattress covers to weary-eyed backers in August 2015.
I don't mean to be alarmist or anything, but isn't this how Skynet got started?
