Rockford Considers Using Federal Money on Brownfields
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — Rockford officials want to use available federal money for environmental cleanup.
Todd Cagnoni is director of community and economic development. He says in a memo that it would cost $235,000 to clean up contaminated soil at the South Main Rail Yards, the former Barber-Colman factory and the former Rockford Watch Co. factory.
The Rockford Register-Star reports that the city's Finance and Personnel Committee is scheduled to discuss the plan Monday.
The city has access to $500,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Supplemental Revolving Loan Funds for Hazardous Substance.
Alderman John Beck says the city owns the properties. He and other officials believe they can be redeveloped.
