With less than a month to go before Election Day, the race for Governor in Illinois is extremely tight. However, it appears the incumbent, Pat Quinn, has the momentum in the race having closed what at one point appeared to be a double-digit deficit. Now, much can change in these last few weeks and perhaps this data gives the Rauner campaign some optimism.

According to a recent Reboot Illinois/We Ask America poll, voters say they trust Bruce Rauner more than Pat Quinn:

While respondents to this week’s gubernatorial poll said they’d vote for Quinn by a margin of 43 percent to 39 percent, the numbers were almost reversed when respondents were asked which candidate they found more trustworthy.

Why? Pollster Gregg Durham, chief operating officer of We Ask America, said, “While Pat Quinn has recently eased ahead in the race, we still feel those results are a bit ethereal.”

As Reboot Illinois points out, despite the tightening of the top line numbers, the "tust" gap remains virtually stagnant.

I would say that's at least a bit of good news for Rauner. If you're undecided or on the fence at all about your vote, it's hard to imagine filling in the circle next to the candidate whom you don't trust. It's not a large advantage, but it is stable despite an avalanche of negative ads by the Quinn campaign trying to make Rauner look like a cross between Mr. Potter and Gordon Gekko.

The first of three televised debates between the candidates takes place tonight. We'll have to see if that might move the meters on the race.
