ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — A Rockford man has died with multiple gunshot wounds after telling police he didn't know who shot him, Rockford police said.

The 41-year-old man was shot early Sunday on a dead-end street that neighbors said was normally quiet, the Rockford Register Star reported. No witnesses have been located and police do not have a suspect description, Assistant Deputy Chief Patrick Hoey said.

The man died during surgery, police said. Authorities were withholding his name until family members were notified, Chief Deputy Coroner William Hintz said.

He was shot in front of duplex where his cousin lives, Hoey said. His cousin called 911 after he heard the shots and the man sought help. It's not known why the man was in the neighborhood at the time because he didn't live there, police said.

There's no reason to believe the shooting is gang related, Lt. Dane Person said. The killing is the 12th in Rockford this year, the newspaper reported.
