Investigators say it happened in the 1200 block of North Alpine around 12:45 Monday morning, when a man driving a silver car rear ended a grey SUV. The driver of the SUV died at the scene. His name and age will be released once family is notified.

Preliminary reports say that speed was a factor in the crash, but more details will be released following a full investigation.

The driver and passenger of the silver car were taken to local hospitals. The passenger sustained life-threatening injuries, while the driver is expected to be okay.

The Rockford Police Department asks drivers to avoid North Alpine Road between Guilford and Highcrest Roads until further notice.
