You have to catch these guys early before they sell out of the REALLY good stuff.

I had not heard of Wehpah Food Truck before Wednesday night when I got a text with a screen shot of their Facebook post announcing they would be setting up at the Forest City Plaza shopping center on State Street at noon on Thursday. Included in the menu was:

  • Chicken empanadas
  • Pernil a Puerto Rican slow roasted pork shoulder
  • Cuban sandwiches
  • Arroz con gandules or Puerto Rican rice and beans

I was in. Unfortunately, I had a conference call at noon that lasted a little longer than the scheduled 15 minutes. Finally pulled up to the truck a little after 1 and was disappointed to find out that they had already run out of empanadas. Apparently, I was one of the last to find out about them.

What I did end up with was an amazing Cuban sandwich made with their Pernil pork.

Here's a video of someone else making Pernil pork if you're not familiar.

WehPah might not follow the same recipe but whatever they're doing is spectacular.

The Cuban is served with a slice of ham, mustard, garlic aioli, and pickles. I recommend you have it without the pickles because they are the worst food ever created, but do what you want.

One thing you absolutely want to do is follow them on Facebook and figure out where they will be popping up soon and get there early for empanadas.

If you get there before I do, please save me a spot in line.
