Median Rent In Rockford Less Than State Average
Rockford generally is known as an affordable place to live, and numbers on the area's rental market appear to back up that claim.
Reboot Illinois took a look at 20 communities around the state and compared the median rent in those areas to the average paid across the state. The Rockford area had the seventh-lowest median rent among those communities, with 34 percent of residents renting their homes. That compares to about about 22 percent across the rest of the state.
The average rent asked for in Illinois is $791 per month, according to areavibes.com, just less than the national average of $801 per month. Here are the official numbers for Rockford and the communities closest to the Forest City in median rent:
- Moline: 29.6 percent of homes are renter-occupied with a median rent of $637 per month
- Rockford: 33.9 percent of homes are renter-occupied with a median rent of $655 per month
- Springfield: 31.8 percent of homes are renter-occupied with a median rent of $671 per month

Cities on the list with higher median rents, like Naperville and Evanston, are closer to Chicago. Conversely, cities with lower median rents, like as East St. Louis and Mt. Vernon, are located in southern Illinois.
