Looking for Illinois’ Best Sub Sandwich? Here’s Where to Find it
You know you're hungry when you're considering a sub sandwich.
I grew up on subs. Not sure why, but I feel like my parents had some serious nostalgia for the sub shop that was just outside of their high school.
I remember the sandwiches being so huge, the bread so crusty with meat and toppings seemingly loaded to the sky. I never managed to get through one of Hero's subs when I was a kid.
While Hero's Sub Shop is long gone, closed in 2015, there's a place in The Windy City that people look at as the very best for a sub in Illinois.
Born in Chicago’s Little Italy in 1960 and now on Michigan Avenue, Fontano’s Subs has stayed true to its roots and specializes in Italian-style subs like the Blockbuster, with ham, salami, capicola and provolone, and Swiss cheeses, and Big Al, layered with mortadella, two types of salami and provolone. The bread is especially good, as is the Italian Beef, served hot with peppers and a gravy “dip”.
Just thinking about a sandwich from Fontano's is making my mouth water.
I'm sure it's not Hero's, and nothing will ever be, but I'll betcha I could eat an entire sub this time around.
Fontano's is located at 332 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
