Illinois Folks Say This State Should Not Be Considered ‘Midwest’
An interesting topic sparked on Reddit and it's something I've never really thought about. The question was
As Illinoisans, who do you consider not a part of the Midwest?
My internal answer came to mind as fast as a Google search result. I'd compare it to that distant relative you only invite to family reunions out of obligation – yes, you're technically family, but you'd rather not claim them.

Sure, it's an architectural marvel and all, but it's essentially Missouri's way of saying, "Hey, we're right here!" To which Illinoisans reply, "Yeah, but you're on the wrong side of the river."
Then there's the cultural divide. Illinois, with its sophisticated cityscape in Chicago and quaint small towns scattered about, often prides itself on being the epitome of Midwestern charm.
People in Illinois perceive Missouri as having more in common with the South, what with the barbecue, sweet tea, and the whole "Show-Me" attitude.
It's like comparing an elegant opera in Chicago to a good old-fashioned barn dance in Branson – both entertaining, but worlds apart.
And let's not forget the heated sports rivalries. Regarding the Cubs vs. Cardinals or the Bears not drafting Pat Mahomes, it's more than just a game; it's a battle of regional pride.
Whether you're from Illinois, Missouri, or anywhere else in the Midwest, we can all agree on one thing: the real enemy is anyone who puts ketchup on their hot dogs.
