No Fishing License Needed in Illinois For Only These Four Days

Four special days are coming up in June when the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is allowing you to cast a line without a license.

No License Needed to Cast a Line for Four Days

The IDNR has announced that anyone can fish without needing a license, trout stamp, or salmon stamp from June 13 through 16 during Free Fishing Days across Illinois.

According to the press release, the goal during these "free days" is to encourage new anglers to try the sport and help experienced fishermen introduce the joy of fishing to children.

How to Participate and Get Free Resources

The IDNR is offering support for groups who are interested in hosting fishing events, including educational materials and fishing gear (while supplies last) for those who complete the online request form.

This initiative is part of the IDNR's larger mission of boosting ourdoor recreation and conservation awareness across Illinois.

Fishing Regulations and Year-Round Requirements

Outside of the Free Fishing Days, the law in Illinois requires anyone who is 16 or older to purchase a fishing license, with some exceptions made for active-duty military personnel and people with disabilities.

2025 Free Fishing Days are happening during the 100th Anniversary of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

Originally established in 1925, the agency manages nearly 400 sites across Illinois and oversees programs in fisheries, forestry, wildlife, natural heritage, and outdoor recreation.
