Rockford's Furniture Store

Like a lot of people in the Stateline area, I grew up knowing Gustafson’s Furniture and Matress as a longtime Rockford staple and dependable business to buy from. So, when I put money down on a new couch there in January, I never expected the drama that unfolded just a few weeks later.

New Update From Gustafson's Furniture & Mattress

After months of sudden shutdowns, unanswered phone calls, confusing Facebook posts, rumors, and reopenings, Gustafson's Furniture & Mattress has finally given us the answers we have been waiting for.

As of May 5, 2026, Gustafson's was still calling it a "Retirement and Restructuring Sale":

Even though customers like myself are still fighting to get our money back, I think we all knew this was the ultimate end to Gustafson's story.

After 98 years in business, Gustafson's Furniture and Mattress is closing, and the Going Out of Business Sale officially begins on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Everything in the store will be available at steep discounts, and the building is also for sale.

Owner Dale Gustafson said in a statement published by Eyewitness News:

It has been our family’s privilege to serve so many other families and loyal customers, and we thank them all for their patience and understanding through this difficult decision and transition.

While I may be mad at how the final chapter of Gustafson's Furniture & Mattress has been handled, I am still sad to see another long-term locally owned business in Rockford close its doors.

Now, the only questions that remains is: what kind of business would Rockford like to see move into that building? Send us an app message and tell us your thoughts!
