The deadline for REAL ID Illinois has changed several times over the past couple of years but a final deadline has been announced.

What Is Real ID Illinois?

I'm hoping that by now you're not that far removed from reality and you have some knowledge about REAL ID Illinois. Just in case you're not exactly sure what it is, don't worry I can help you out.

According to nbcchicago.com,

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, "establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards."

So basically, what the government is telling us is that our current system isn't up to snuff for security reasons. If that makes things safer, especially when traveling then I'm all good with it. Plus honestly, there isn't anything we can do to fight it.

Final Drop Dead Date For REAL ID Illinois

It's crazy because this law was passed way back in 2005. It was originally supposed to take effect on October 19th, 2021. Unfortunately, the pandemic put the kibosh on that day. Since then, that date has been pushed back a handful of times. Now, we finally have the official deadline.

According to patch.com,

The deadline to get a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license has changed so many times it’s almost a punchline for a joke. Now, the date for Illinois residents need to remember is May 7, 2025.

At this point, you have a year and five months to get one, so there's no excuse. I know I'll be like most residents and wait until the very end to jump on the bandwagon. For everything you need to know about REAL ID Illinois, HERE.
