The mall in Danville closed, and Eastland Mall in Bloomington is gone, too. Stratford Square Mall in Bloomingdale is the latest mall in Illinois to announce a closing.
As our shopping habits change, mall owners across the state are forced to find ways to keep the lights on. Repurposing space is what many owners have tried when they can no longer entice new retail tenants.
You don't have to drive very far to pass an entire strip mall closed and boarded up. Now, it's becoming more common to see former brick-and-mortar shopping meccas turned into giant eyesores.

The once bustling Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee is just two businesses now, a Cinemark Movie Theater and a Kohl's store. The previous mall owners tried to find new tenants, but they failed.
The Village of West Dundee bought the property in 2021 and has scheduled the entire mall for demolition.
According to NBC Chicago, fencing is expected to go up around the mall and its parking lots in late spring, with demolition expected to begin this summer.
