Illinois Teacher’s Touching Award Nomination Letter from Her Big Sister
Being told by your older sister, who is a Covid nurse, that you are her hero, was all it took for this 6th-grade teacher to give her waterproof mascara a challenge.
In my 27 years of hosting the morning show at 97ZOK, there have been numerous occasions where I've been having such a good time on the phone with someone that I wished I was in the car with them. This is a story about one of those mornings.
Let's start with congratulations to Angelica Cobos, from Barbour Elementary in Rockford, Illinois.
97ZOK's Teacher of the Week
Completely unaware of the recognition about to come her way, I called Angelica to share the good news. She answered the phone in her car on the way to school with her two children in the backseat who attend the same school where she works.
I asked if she was ready to hear the Teacher of the Week nomination letter written about her, and asked her to prepare to cry. She didn't know who wrote the nomination letter until I said that person's name, Julie Hernandez, and that's when her waterproof mascara started being tested. Julie is Angelica's big sister.
There’s not enough room in this little box to tell you how amazing my sister is. She has gone through so much in life and all she’s ever wanted is to give back. She used to teach at Roosevelt community Education center and the students there nominated her for a golden apple award but she was unable to receive it because she had not yet taught for five years.
Now, she gives everything, she pours into everyone, and she does this in English and Spanish at Barbour. I just want her to know how amazing, and how important she is. That we SEE her and all she does for her coworkers and her students. I’ve seen all the tears and heard of all the accomplishments. She may be my younger sister but I look up to her. She never asks for anything and she gets super embarrassed by attention so she’s going to love this! Hahaha
You probably guessed already what words in that letter impacted Angelica the most.
She may be my younger sister but I look up to her.
Angelica shared that her sister has been a covid nurse since the pandemic began and how she has given so much of herself to her patients and families. I was right in the middle of a 'love fest' between two sisters who have so much admiration for each other. It filled my heart so much to be in their space.
As 97ZOK's Teacher of the Week, Angelica was surprised at school with dessert from Nothing Bundt Cakes and gifts from WM DaySpa.
