America’s First Cross-Country Highway Travels Through Indiana and Illinois
A cross-country road trip on America's oldest cross-country highway sounds like a blast.
The Good Old American Roadtrip
Road trips happen everywhere, but there is something uniquely "American" about a long road trip. Sometimes they are just a means to an end, a way to get you to your destination. However, sometimes the destination is the road trip itself. For instance, many people have set out on Route 66 over the years, with the destination being Route 66 itself. While Route 66 is the most well-known of the "great American road trips" there are also road trips all across the United States that show off different areas. For instance the Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway or the Pacific Coast Highway. Maybe you want to take in some of America's history and take a trip down a historic highway? This would be the perfect road trip for you!
America's First Cross-Country Highway
The Lincoln Highway was the first road to cross the entire country. It begins in New York and ends in California. The Lincoln Highway Association works to preserve the highway's legacy and history.
The lincoln highway was the first transcontinental road for automobiles in the United States, dedicated in 1913. It winds its way over 3,000 miles between New York City and San Francisco
What I also found fascinating is the Lincoln Highway is the brainchild of the same man who is responsible for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The idea of the Lincoln Highway came from the fertile mind of Carl Fisher, the man also responsible for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Miami Beach. With help from fellow industrialists Frank Seiberling and Henry Joy, an improved, hard-surfaced road was envisioned that would stretch almost 3400 miles from coast to coast, New York to San Francisco, over the shortest practical route.
