Good Chance Wisconsin Sees Northern Lights Due to ‘Cannibal CME’

If you call Wisconsin home, you definitely want to keep an eye on the skies Tuesday night as the Northern Lights should be brilliantly on display thanks to an incoming 'cannibal CME' from the sun.

I'd like to be clear that I'm not the one calling this coronal mass ejection a 'cannibal'. It's NASA's fault. What is a 'cannibal CME' according to the space nerds? NASA says it's when multiple "Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs)...electrified, magnetic gas weighing billions of tons ejected from the Sun and hurled into space with speeds ranging from 12 to 1,250 miles per second (about 20 to 2,000 kilometers per second)."

Earth/Sky shared the news about multiple CME's that are incoming and should (key word) provide a widely-visible display of the Northern Lights Tuesday night, February 13, 2024. This is the line shared by NOAA's Aurora Forecast. The red line is where the Aurora Borealis will be visible on the horizon. The green glow is when they will be visible over your head.

Confidence is high that most of Wisconsin will at least see the Northern Lights on the horizon and the northern part of the state stands a good chance of seeing some dancing lights overhead.

Big time disclaimer: Forecasting the Northern Lights is very difficult to do. This is just an estimation on when the particles from the sun will begin affecting our atmosphere.
