As an earthquake nut, I thought I had seen it all. An earthquake Friday proves that I still haven't. The USGS has confirmed there was an earthquake under Lake Michigan Friday which was felt by many in Wisconsin.

Are earthquakes in the Great Lakes common?

Wikipedia confirms that there is a Great Lakes Tectonic Zone. However, it appears that measurable earthquakes large enough to be felt are relatively rare. It says that the best documented Great Lakes earthquake in this region was a moderate 4.6 quake on July 9, 1975.

Perhaps this was just a strange isolated earthquake that happens every now and then in the Great Lakes. If it's the beginning of something more significant remains to be seen.

As this is a developing story, it will be updated if the USGS provides more information about why the Great Lakes shook Friday.
