Why This Water Could Cause Many Californians to Move to Illinois
In the past year, more than 20,000 California residents made the decision to move to Illinois. Now, because of an issue with water, there could be even more beginning in 2024.
According to the Sacramento Bee, 20,523 California residents moved to Illinois between 2021 and 2022. Expect those numbers to grow in 2024 and it's all because of drinking water. You might not want to scroll down any further if you have a meal happening soon.
As Cal Matters reported, the grand state of California has passed rules that turn sewage water into drinking water and send it straight into California homes. They call it (and I'm not making this up) "toilet to tap". Ew.
Before you judge this as just another wacky California thing, there is a good reason why they're doing this. California is suffering under a horrific drought which is making water a scarce resource.
The water isn't as gnarly as it sounds either. If someone handed you a glass of water that has been made potable from sewage, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless someone told you. The California sub-Reddit claims it's the cleanest drinking water you'll ever find.
It's an understatement to say that many believe this will make the current exodus from California to states like Illinois even more dramatic. Frankly, I find this hard to believe. However, I understand the mental gymnastics necessary to not gag when you pour a glass of tap water and know...where it came from.
Time will tell if Illinois sees an increase in Californians calling the Land of Lincoln home. Considering the fact that Illinois has its own issues with residents leaving, perhaps an influx of more west coast folks wouldn't be so bad after all.
