Would you agree that it's gotten warmer earlier than it normally does in Missouri? Does that mean we've seen our last freeze for the season? According to history, don't put your tomato plants out just yet.

By all regular measurements, Missouri had a mild winter. As I mentioned last week, this early warmth in 2024 has led many to question if Missouri's weather has gone wacky. Many who have gardens are wondering if it's time to begin Spring planting already. I would wait if I were you based on some data shared by the National Weather Service in St. Louis.

This interesting data shows the average date of the last freeze for different parts of Missouri. Notice that almost all of the areas in the state are in early or mid-April.

There's another reason to put a wait and see on Spring planting as the National Weather Service in Missouri is now saying there's a good chance the state will see below normal temperatures later in March.

That outlook appears to be accurate based on the forecast for Missouri for the next week. The high on Monday, March 19, 2024 is only 46. That's chilly and will likely mean temps the night before will have dipped below freezing. Ironic that date is right before Spring officially begins.

This is all another reminder that although our weather has been mild, winter may not be completely done with us - yet.
