This strange raccoon fact search started innocently enough. I came across a fun new video from Arkansas (which explains a lot) showing a pet raccoon eating a snack like he owns the place.

Never stop being you, Arkansas.

Completely coincidentally, I came across a brand new breakdown by Homesnacks showing what states you can legally have a raccoon. Look at you, Illinois.

What do you have to do if you want a pet raccoon in Illinois?

Exotic Pet Wonderland says that you can have a pet raccoon in Illinois with a permit that will cost you 25 bucks plus 50 cents. Oh, and Illinois requires that you renew it annually (for an additional $25.50 of course). Note that if you want to sell raccoons in Illinois, you will also need a USDA license.

Now the big question. Should you get a pet raccoon? It's complicated.

My wife and kids think raccoons are cute as buttons. Would we have one as a pet if we could? Nope. I have a hard enough time getting access to snacks as it is and don't want/need a raccoon as a food competitor. Doesn't mean you shouldn't though. It's just a high-maintenance animal to care for.

As always, make sure you check in not just on state laws but also local ordinances on your own if the pet raccoon idea becomes more serious.
